PENN STATE vs the world
Today, it is Nittany Nation against the world. We have come prepared for battle. As we glance upon the hills that overlook Happy Valley, we reminisce over the past week and what we know and love about Dear Old State with the world watching.
This week everyone has had their own opinion about the school that I have come to know and love and frankly, I have had enough. Penn State is so much more than football and the sex abuse scandal. Penn State is my home, my family. Penn State allowed me to meet some of the most awesome on this planet and open doors for me that I could never have imagined. I found love, best friends, nights I remembered and nights I should have remembered. I’ve learned lessons about life and gained a deeper understanding of self and it’s all because of Penn State. I’m sure many other Penn Staters share my emotions in various ways. I can no longer sit here calmly as you continue to disrespect my school, my family, my home.
I understand the bizarre circumstances of what has come upon our prestigious university and pray for the victims of the vile crimes of one, Jerry Sandusky. As a proud Penn State alum, I cannot lie and say that I am not ashamed, embarrassed, or heartbroken. But Penn State is NOT Jerry Sandusky. Penn State is the students! We must move on and understand the bigger issues of what is going on. It is not the students fault but the administration’s. But now, we, the students and alum bear the brunt of the bullet. Yes, our administration failed us but we cannot and will not let their shortcomings define Penn State. I along with the rest of the students and faculty now have to defend the honor of what we believe in. I believe in the students of Penn State and I always will. Success with Honor is what we believe in and we will continue to uphold it!
News outlets flocked to State College, PA for a “juicy” story and made Joseph Vincent Paterno and Penn State football the face of the issue. This scandal is bigger than Joe Pa and Penn State football. The media made everyone forget who the “real bad guy” was. And that is Jerry Sandusky. Yes, I agree with many of you. Joe Pa could and should have done more and he is morally guilty of that. But for the administration of Penn State to disrespect Joe Pa along with the rest of the world was completely uncalled for. They must have forgotten that “We ARE” because they made ill-advised decisions based on what they thought the media and people that have absolutely NOTHING to do with Penn State thought they should do. Again, this took us away from the real issue: Jerry Sandusky and the victims. Penn State’s administration did what they thought was in their best interest, not the students that pay a lot of money to attend or the victims of Jerry Sandusky. This is a shame and I blame it on the media. The administration didnt stick with us, at all. They told Joe Pa he was fired over the phone?! That is highly disrespectful for someone who has done so much for Penn State. They should be ashamed of themselves. I agree with Joe Pa retiring at the end of the season but to hastily fire him without deep thought and conversation about the real issues was utterly ridiculous. Penn State has already been tarnished and I dont think keeping Joe Pa until the end of the season would have done much more harm.
Since the the national media, blog, and gossip sites caused so much harm and jet-set to State College, what do they feel they’ve accomplished? The bigger question that I have is, Where will they be in our shining moments? I watched the news yesterday and they just mentioned vigil and the money that they held for the victims of child sex abuse in passing. Where is the national news media everyday on Penn State’s campus, when students are raising money for world disasters and various charities? Where is the national news media during THON, the world’s largest student-run philanthropic event? Where is the national media when we are excelling academically in every field? The answer to these questions is “somewhere else”. My point is that be there for us when we’re up as well as down and cover all angles of the situation.
Penn State is one of the best school’s in the country, if not the world. We may be down, but we are not broken. We will give the media something to talk about that is positive. From my own perspective, if you’ve never had a balance on your eLion account from the bursar’s office, please, with all due respect, shut the hell up!!!

I wouldn’t say I’m narcissistic, but I am truly in love with myself.
